How it works
What paint correction is, and what it does to your paint
Most swirl marks and light scratches sit in the clear coat, the transparent top layer of your paint. Paint correction uses a machine polisher with abrasive compounds and polishes to level that clear coat down to the bottom of the defect, so light reflects evenly again. Nothing is filled or hidden: the defect is taken out of the surface.
That's also its limit. Factory clear coat is typically only about 35–50 microns (1.5–2 mils) thick, thinner than a sheet of printer paper, and what's polished away doesn't grow back. The skill is knowing how much to remove, and when to stop.

Self-check
Check your paint: swirl, scratch or damage?
Wash and dry the area, then look at it in direct sunlight or under a phone flashlight held at an angle. Run a fingernail gently across the mark, not along it. It's a rough guide, not a measurement, but it tells you which of these four you're most likely looking at.
1 · Swirls and light marring
Fingernail: No catch
Fine circular or spiderweb scratches that show in sun or under lights. The paint feels smooth. They sit in the top of the clear coat.
→ Correctable in most cases. Usually One-Step.
2 · Light scratch
Fingernail: A slight catch, or you can only just feel it
Often at or near the bottom of the clear coat. Some are still within it; some have just gone past it.
→ May be reduced, and sometimes removed; full removal isn't guaranteed. Our readings decide how far it's safe to go. Usually Two-Stage.
3 · Deep scratch
Fingernail: It drags
Likely through the clear coat into the color layer.
→ Usually can't be polished out. It can look less obvious once the paint around it is corrected, but it normally needs touch-up or refinishing.
4 · Into the primer or metal
Fingernail: Drags, and you see a different color (primer) or bare metal
Correction can't add paint back.
→ Needs paint, not polishing: a touch-up or body-shop repair.
This check is a starting point. Some scratches that catch a nail are still within the clear coat, and some that don't are deeper than they look. Our inspection lighting and paint-thickness readings decide the plan.
Other defects correction deals with
- Holograms and buffer trails: hazy trails, usually from an earlier machine polish done badly, visible in direct sun. Correctable with correct re-polishing.
- Oxidation: a dull, chalky or faded look. Azul corrects single-stage paint too (common on older and classic cars), where oxidation can often be polished off. If the clear coat itself is failing (peeling, flaking or cloudy patches), polishing can't fix it.
- Water spots: Houston's city water is hard, averaging about 136 mg/L. Mineral spots sitting on top are treated during prep with a water-spot remover; unusually heavy spotting is priced from photos first. Spots that have etched into the clear coat need correction. Deep etching may only improve, and severe etching can need refinishing.
- Bird droppings and bug etching: dull marks with defined edges. Sometimes correctable; deep etching may only improve. During lovebug season (May and September), wash bugs off as soon as you can.
- Isolated deep scratches: single scratches from a key, branch, bag or zipper. Judge them with the fingernail check above.

How your quote works
Starting prices reflect a typical vehicle in the condition each level is designed for. Your quote depends on:
- Vehicle size
- How many defects there are, and how deep
- Paint thickness, hardness and any repainted panels
- Which level your paint can safely take
We review your form and photos before confirming, and tell you if your vehicle's size or condition changes the price. On the day, the test section and paint-thickness readings confirm the plan. If you choose a different level from the one you booked, or the readings show the plan needs to change, the price changes only with your approval. Prices are before applicable tax.
Reserving your date
- Deposit: 20% of your approved price (minimum $100), requested after we've reviewed your form and photos. It reserves the day and applies toward your final invoice.
- Cancelling or moving: cancel at least 48 hours before your appointment and the deposit is refunded, or move it to a new date. With less than 48 hours' notice, a cancellation or no-show may forfeit the deposit, but you can reschedule once to a date within 60 days and your deposit moves with it.
- Weather: if Azul reschedules because of weather or site conditions, your full deposit moves to the new date.
- Payment: the balance is due when the work is complete. A 3% surcharge may apply to credit cards where legally permitted; it doesn't apply to debit cards.
- Financing: flexible financing options may be available through PocketSuite at checkout, subject to approval and provider terms.
The process
What every correction includes
The polishing is the part you see. The preparation, measuring and test section around it are what keep your paint safe, and let you decide with your own eyes.
1 · Arrive and look together
01 · Walk-around with you. A quick inspection of the vehicle together before we start.
2 · Prep the paint
02 · Rinse, foam, rinse. Loose dirt comes off before anything touches the paint.
03 · Chemical and physical decontamination. Bonded contamination is removed so the pads work on clean paint.
04 · Water-spot treatment. Mineral spots on top of the paint are removed first, so we see what's actually etched. Unusually heavy spotting, tar or sap is priced from photos.
05 · Dry. Dried with clean, soft microfiber so no new water spots form before the paint is inspected.
3 · Measure and test
06 · Inspection under correction lighting. Panel by panel, so we see defects that garage lighting hides.
07 · Paint-thickness readings. On the metal panels. Thin areas and repainted panels get a gentler plan.
08 · Test section. We tape off part of the hood, usually a quarter to a third, and correct one side of the tape line.
09 · You see it and choose. We show you the before-and-after on the test section. If Two-Stage might be needed, we correct one test section each way, side by side, and you choose how we proceed.
4 · Correct and protect
10 · Correction. The whole car at the level you chose, panel by panel.
11 · Final inspection. Under the lights, with polishing residue wiped off.
12 · Protection. Finished with a ceramic wax, protection up to 6 months, or a ceramic coating if you added one.
Measured, not guessed.
Before polishing, we measure paint thickness and inspect under dedicated lighting. That tells us how much correction your paint can safely take, and where to hold back. A paint-thickness gauge reads the total paint on each metal panel, down to the metal. It can't isolate the clear coat on its own, but it reveals thin spots and repainted panels, which is exactly where we go gentler. Plastic bumpers and composite parts can't be read this way, so we judge them visually and correct them conservatively.
Why we sometimes stop.
Azul puts paint preservation ahead of chasing 100% defect removal. If further polishing would compromise your clear coat, we stop and explain why.

Mobile, with the conditions correction needs
Mobile service with environmental protection and condition management, including canopy/shade and airflow when needed. Service may be rescheduled when weather or site conditions would compromise results.
- Correction is scheduled early in the day so there's time to finish properly.
- We may reschedule for rain, excessive wind, dust or unsafe surface temperatures, and your full deposit moves to the new date.
- We bring our own water, power and professional lighting.
- You need a legal, safe, accessible space large enough to work around the vehicle. Apartments, condos, offices and managed garages must permit detailing; covered garages also need adequate ventilation and clearance.

Why swirls look worse on dark paint
Swirls are tiny scratches that catch light and show up white or grey. On black and dark blue paint that contrast is obvious. On white, silver and light grey paint the same swirls are there but much harder to see. They show most in direct sun or under a single bright light, viewed at an angle. That's why we inspect under dedicated lighting, and why the same correction makes a more visible difference on dark paint.

Honest limits
What paint correction can't fix
Knowing this before you book saves money and disappointment. If something on your car falls in the right-hand column, we'll tell you at the photo assessment, or when we take readings on the day.

- Swirl marks and wash marring
- Holograms and buffer trails
- Light scratches within the clear coat
- Light dullness and light oxidation
- Lightly etched water spots
- Surface paint transfer
Sometimes: improves, may not disappear
- Scratches that catch a fingernail
- Isolated deep scratches
- Deeper water-spot, bird or bug etching
- Heavy oxidation on single-stage paint (common on older vehicles)
- Panels where readings show thin paint or a repaint (we limit correction there)
Not fixable by polishing, and what fixes it
- Rock chips → touch-up or paint repair
- Dents and dings → paintless dent repair, if the paint isn't broken
- Scratches through to primer or metal → touch-up or refinishing
- Peeling, flaking, cloudy or failing clear coat (including "oxidation" that is really clear coat breaking down) → refinishing
- Orange peel (texture in the paint itself) → full-panel sanding and polishing, which we don't do. We only wet-sand isolated spots.
- Sanding marks that swell under a body-shop repaint → refinishing

A controlled One-Step Paint Correction removed the haze and improved the look, and a ceramic wax was applied to help preserve the finish. Polishing can't repair clear coat that is breaking down; the lasting fix is refinishing. We said so before we started.

Why no percentages?
Many shops advertise "70%" or "90%" defect removal. The same work gives very different results on different paint, and those numbers rarely say what they're a percentage of. We'd rather show you your paint under our lights and tell you what's realistic.
Not scratch-proof afterwards
Correction doesn't make paint scratch-proof. New swirls come from washing and daily use, so keeping it corrected is mostly about how the car is washed. Aftercare ↓
Order of operations
Correct first, then protect: ceramic coating and PPF
A ceramic coating or paint protection film is a clear layer over your paint. It doesn't fill or hide swirls; it locks in whatever the paint looks like underneath, and under a glossy coating, defects can look even more obvious. So the order matters: correct first, protect second.

- Already coated? Polishing removes the coating wherever it's polished, so those areas need recoating afterward.
Paint protection film (PPF)
- Order: Azul doesn't install PPF. If you're having film installed elsewhere, correct the paint first, because film sits on top and shows what's under it.
- Existing film: Azul can polish existing PPF. It's quoted from photos as PPF polishing, not as a paint correction level, because film is a different surface from clear coat. Example: a Tesla with about seven-year-old film that had gone hazy and dull, with swirls, light scratches, stains and some yellowing. Polishing in 2025 restored its clarity and reduced the yellowing, though not completely. Yellowing inside the film doesn't always polish out; when it doesn't, the film needs replacing.

Keeping it corrected
Correction levels the surface instead of filling it, so the result doesn't wash away the way a glaze does. New swirls come from washing and daily use, which is why aftercare matters.

Will paint correction remove all my scratches?
Not always, and Azul doesn't promise a percentage. Swirls and scratches within the clear coat can usually be removed or greatly reduced. Scratches that catch your fingernail may be reduced, but full removal isn't guaranteed, and anything through to the color, primer or metal needs touch-up or refinishing. Azul stops polishing when removing more would compromise your clear coat, and tells you what's realistic before starting.
Can paint correction fix rock chips, dents or peeling clear coat?
No. Polishing removes a thin layer of clear coat; it can't add paint back or reshape metal. Rock chips need touch-up or a paint repair, dents need paintless dent repair when the paint isn't broken, and peeling or failing clear coat needs refinishing. Correction can make the paint around those areas look better, and Azul will point out anything it can't fix at your assessment.
Can paint correction remove water spots?
It depends on the type. Mineral spots sitting on top of the paint are common with Houston's hard water; Azul treats them during prep with a water-spot remover before correcting, and unusually heavy spotting is priced from photos first. Etched spots have gone into the clear coat and need paint correction; deep etching may only improve. Azul identifies which kind you have from photos and under inspection lighting.
Does paint correction damage or thin my clear coat?
Correction removes a very small amount of clear coat; that's how it levels defects, and clear coat doesn't grow back. Factory clear coat is typically about 35–50 microns thick, so it has to be done carefully. Azul measures paint thickness across the car before polishing, uses the least aggressive approach that works, goes gentler on thin or repainted panels, and stops when further polishing would compromise the paint.
How long do paint correction results last?

Often not full correction, but new cars can arrive with light swirls or marring from transport, lot washing or dealer prep. If you plan to coat a new car, the Paint Enhancement polish included with every Azul ceramic coating is often enough; if your photos show more, Azul will recommend One-Step. The free photo assessment tells you before you spend anything.
How long does paint correction take?
One-Step Paint Correction usually takes about 4–5 hours, Two-Stage about 5–7 hours, and Multi-Stage 8 hours or more depending on condition. Correction is scheduled earlier in the day so there's time to finish properly. Correction plus a ceramic coating takes longer.
Can Azul do paint correction at my home or office in Houston?
Yes. Azul Auto Detailing is fully mobile across the greater Houston area and brings its own water, power and professional lighting, with canopy/shade and airflow when needed. Azul may reschedule for rain, wind, dust or unsafe surface temperatures. You need a legal, safe space large enough to work around the vehicle, and apartments, condos, offices and managed garages must permit detailing.
