Houston is hard on a car's finish. Long, hot summers, strong sun, hard water, twice-yearly lovebug flights and trees that drop pollen and residue all work against your paint. A ceramic coating won't make a car invincible, but for owners who plan to keep a car and want it to look its best with less effort, it's one of the most useful things you can do for it. Here's what a coating actually does in Houston conditions, what it doesn't do, and how Azul applies it.
What Houston does to paint
- Heat and sun. Houston averages roughly 102 days a year at or above 90°F. Heat is known to speed up etching from bird droppings, so they do their damage faster in a Houston summer.
- Hard water. Houston's city water averages about 136 mg/L of hardness, which the USGS classifies as hard. Left to dry on paint, especially in the sun, it leaves mineral spots, and spots left long enough can etch into the clear coat.
- Lovebugs. According to the Texas A&M Forest Service, adults emerge in May and September, and their slightly acidic body fluids can damage paint if they aren't removed within a few days. Our lovebug season guide covers what to do.
- Trees. Oak-lined streets and wooded neighborhoods mean pollen, sap and bird droppings on cars parked outside.
Your car's shine comes from its clear coat, and on a typical factory finish that layer is only about 35 to 50 microns thick. Anything that etches into it has to be polished out, and clear coat that's polished away doesn't grow back.
What a ceramic coating does
A ceramic coating is a very thin, slick layer over your paint that can't be peeled off and wears slowly over the years. On a coated car you can expect:
- Deeper gloss on the paint you already have
- Strong water beading, so water sheets off and washing is easier
- Resistance to many chemicals, UV and contaminants
- Help against bird droppings, sap and bugs, which come off more easily
- Long-term surface protection, measured in years rather than months
What it doesn't do
This part matters as much as the benefits. A ceramic coating won't:
- make paint scratch-proof or chip-proof
- remove existing swirls or scratches (that's what paint correction is for)
- stop water spots caused by neglect or the environment
- replace regular, correct washing and documented maintenance
If rock chips are your main concern, that's the job of paint protection film. We explain the difference, and how the two can work together, in Ceramic Coating or PPF?
Coating vs. wax and sealant
Waxes and sealants protect too, just for much shorter periods. At Azul:
- Paint sealant (in an Exterior Detail + Gloss Reset): up to 3 months
- Ceramic wax/sealant after a Paint Enhancement polish (in Wash & Polish): up to 6 months
- Ceramic coating: a multi-year package term of 3, 5 or 8 years
"Up to" means good conditions. How long any protection lasts depends on sun, washing habits and upkeep.
Correct first, then coat
A coating locks in whatever the paint looks like underneath. Under a glossy coating, swirls and scratches can look even more obvious. That's why every Azul coating package starts with preparation: a thorough wash, chemical decontamination, mechanical decontamination when needed, a paint inspection, paint-thickness measurements and a Paint Enhancement polish for gloss and clarity.
If swirls or scratches bother you, paint correction replaces that polish, so you don't pay for both: One-Step from +$249, Two-Stage from +$449, or Multi-Stage by custom quote. No correction level promises a fixed percentage of defect removal.
Azul's ceramic coating packages
All three packages include the same preparation. They differ in which surfaces are coated and how long the coating is designed to last. Prices are starting prices, before applicable tax.
- 3-Year Ceramic Coating, from $895: paint, exterior trim, headlights and taillights. Exterior glass and wheel faces can be added from $149 each.
- 5-Year Ceramic Coating, from $1,099: the same surfaces, plus exterior glass and wheel faces.
- 8-Year Ceramic Coating, from $1,345: the same coated surfaces as the 5-Year, with our longest-lasting paint coating.
Every package comes with a written Azul warranty matched to its term (3, 5 or 8 years), with full terms on your warranty card. It applies to coated exterior painted surfaces, and coverage depends on documented coating maintenance at least every 6 months. See the full details on our ceramic coating page.
Mobile, at your home or office
Azul applies coatings at your home, office or an approved garage anywhere in greater Houston, with our own water, power and lighting, and with canopy, shade and airflow when needed. An appointment usually takes about 6 to 10 or more hours on site and is scheduled earlier in the day. We'll reschedule for rain, excessive wind, dust or unsafe surface temperatures, and your full deposit moves to the new date.
Caring for a coated car in Houston
- Keep the car dry for at least the first hour, and don't wash it for the first 3 days.
- For the first 7 days, avoid harsh chemicals, abrasion, polishing and unnecessary contamination.
- Hand wash regularly with a pH-neutral shampoo and clean microfiber towels.
- Remove bird droppings, bugs, sap and water spots quickly.
- Avoid automatic brush car washes, harsh chemicals and acidic cleaners.
- Have documented coating maintenance done at least every 6 months. The Azul Car Club includes coating-safe maintenance visits every 4, 6 or 8 weeks, from $129 per visit.
